FAQ

How does the timber log wall construction work?

Traditional Chinese log construction uses interlocking joints: the logs at each corner are joined using a dovetail notch (燕尾榫) cut at each end. The logs are stacked horizontally, with a groove along the bottom edge that interlocks with a tongue on the top of the log below. This creates a weather-tight seal without any gaps. Moss or hemp fiber is traditionally used as a chinking material between logs.

Can these buildings meet modern building codes?

Yes. Our log buildings are engineered to meet modern building codes including: structural snow load, wind load, seismic resistance, and fire safety. We can incorporate fire-retardant treated timber or add intumescent coatings to achieve the required fire rating. Structural calculations are provided for permitting in any country.

Installation & Operation Guide

1

Foundation & Sill Plate

Prepare a concrete perimeter foundation or pad footings at each corner and intermediate position. Install a continuous sill plate (treated timber) on top of the foundation, level and anchored. Apply bitumen waterproofing between the concrete and timber.

2

Log Wall Construction

Lay the first course of logs (sill logs) on the sill plate. Cut dovetail notches at the corners for interlocking. Lay each successive log, using a rubber mallet to seat each one firmly. Install the temporary bracing to keep walls straight during construction.

3

Opening Creation

As the wall height reaches window and door openings, cut the logs to create the opening. Install header beams (lintel logs) above the openings to carry the load of the logs above. The window and door frames are fitted after the log wall is complete.

4

Roof Installation

After the walls are complete and braced, install the gable-end wall framing (log or timber frame). Erect the roof trusses or rafters. Apply roof sheathing, underlayment, and roofing material per the specification.

5

Weatherproofing & Chinking

Apply chinking (moss, hemp fiber, or modern foam backer rod) to all gaps between logs. Apply a breathable wood stabilizer or stain to all exterior log surfaces. Install window and door frames with butyl rubber weatherstripping for a draft-free seal.

6

Interior & Final Inspection

Install electrical and plumbing services in the wall cavities (with protective plates at timber penetrations). Complete interior finishes. Conduct a full energy audit and thermal imaging check for drafts. Verify all connections and provide the as-built maintenance documentation.
