Cedar (Cedrus deodara) — naturally decay-resistant, aromatic, lightweight, ideal for garden pergolas. Pressure-treated pine — cost-effective, excellent durability with ACQ/CCA treatment. Cypress (侧柏) — traditional Chinese choice, naturally oil-rich and durable. All species accept stain or paint well.
With annual maintenance (cleaning, re-staining every 2-3 years), a properly built wooden pergola lasts 20-40 years depending on climate. In dry climates with minimal rain, cedar pergolas can last 40+ years. In humid or tropical climates, expect 15-25 years with good maintenance.
Yes. Standard freestanding pergolas range from 2m x 2m to 6m x 4m. We also build attached pergolas (to walls/structures) and custom shapes including curved, hexagonal, and multi-section continuous runs. Simply provide your dimensions and we'll produce custom drawings for approval before manufacturing.
For a pergola beam without intermediate posts: 2.5m span using 90x190mm timber; 3.5m span using 140x290mm timber; 4.5m span using 190x390mm timber or steel-reinforced timber. For longer spans, we recommend intermediate support columns or a steel post combination.
Annual: clean with a soft brush and mild detergent. Every 1-2 years: apply an exterior wood stain or transparent wood sealant. Focus on end grains and joints. Check all bolted connections and re-tighten if needed. In snowy climates, remove snow accumulation from the top structure to reduce load.
We provide detailed installation drawings and a step-by-step manual with every kit. For small pergolas (under 3m span), 2 people can typically assemble in 1 day. For large or complex designs, we recommend our certified installation team (available in China and select international locations at additional cost).
Mark the pergola footprint using pegs and string. Verify all dimensions match the plan. For freestanding pergolas, ensure the site is level. For attached pergolas, mark the wall-mount positions using a spirit level.
Set posts in concrete footings (minimum 400x400x600mm). Use a post level to ensure vertical alignment in both axes. Brace posts temporarily until concrete sets (minimum 48 hours). Check diagonal measurements to confirm square positioning.
Install the main beams on top of posts. Use galvanized steel brackets and coach bolts for secure connections. For attached pergolas, install wall plates or ledger boards first using masonry anchors or through-bolts.
Install rafters at right angles to the beams, spaced at 300-600mm intervals depending on the design. For an open pergola: leave gaps between rafters for light. For a shaded pergola: install lattice panels or tightly-spaced rafters. Use stainless steel screws or traditional mortise-tenon joinery.
Install horizontal training wires or trellis panels for climbing plants. For grape vines: install 2-3 horizontal wires at 300mm spacing. For roses: attach trellis panels to the structure. Plants typically need 1-2 growing seasons to cover the structure fully.
Apply wood stain or weatherproofing finish to all surfaces. Install trim pieces for a clean appearance. Provide planting guide for appropriate climbing plants for the local climate. Annual maintenance schedule begins from year one.
