What Exactly Are Chuitou?
Chuitou are decorative wooden brackets hanging beneath the eaves of traditional Chinese buildings. Carved into shapes like lotuses, lanterns, or cloud patterns, they are elaborately painted with mineral pigments in blues, greens, reds, and golds. In Luoyang’s newly renovated commercial street, these painted chuitou have become a viral photo backdrop, drawing tourists away from mainstream attractions and proving that authenticity sells.
The Caihua Technique
Caihua is traditional Chinese architectural painting. The Luoyang project uses hexi caihua, the highest grade reserved for imperial buildings. Steps include surface preparation with lacquer and brick powder, raw tung oil sealing, charcoal drafting, mineral pigment application (azurite blue, malachite green, cinnabar red), fine outlining, and a protective UV-resistant clear coat. Each chuitou took three days; 20 painters worked over four months on 500+ pieces.
Materials and Craftsmanship
Luoyang chuitou are carved from high-density nanmu wood, prized for its insect resistance and fine grain. Camphor or elm serve as budget alternatives. Wood must be properly seasoned to the local climate to prevent warping. Authentic caihua requires a hybrid approach: traditional mineral pigments for colour with modern UV-stable clear coats for longevity in urban environments.
