We manufacture both types. Display replicas: crafted for visual accuracy with reinforced internal structure. We can replicate carts and carriages from the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) through the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Key references include: Han Dynasty funerary cart models (from archaeological finds), Tang Dynasty luxury carriages, Song Dynasty merchant carts, Ming-Qing period farm carts and official carriages. Standard functional handcarts (single axle): 200-500kg load capacity. Standard farm carts (twin axle): 500-1500kg load capacity. Heavy-duty transport carts: up to 3000kg. All load capacities are verified through structural calculation before manufacturing.
Traditional wooden wheels require: weekly axle greasing (use a grease gun on the bearing nipple); monthly inspection of spoke tension (tap spokes with a mallet — tight spokes ring, loose spokes thud); annual re-oiling of the wheel rim where the rim band meets the spokes. With proper maintenance, traditional wheels last 20+ years of regular use.
Client specifies the historical period and intended use. Our historian researches period-appropriate designs from archaeological records, paintings, and texts. We produce scale drawings and 3D renderings for approval.
The wheel is the most critical component. Spokes are fitted into the mortised hub (穀) and the mortised felloe (辋) segments. Each joint is glued and secured with wooden pins (辐). The iron tyre band (铁箍) is heated and shrunk onto the assembled wheel, creating a tight, authentic fit. Wheels are balanced before use.
The axle is set into the frame at the correct height and angle (toe-in for stability). The frame uses traditional mortise-tenon joinery throughout. Body panels are fitted to the frame, historically using draw-boring techniques (the wood peg is driven through a slightly undersized hole, creating an extremely tight fit).
Forge iron axle caps, axle linings, linchpins, and decorative hardware. Apply a traditional black lacquer finish to iron components. Install the axle into the wheel hubs with pre-greased bearings. Test rotation freely without binding.
Apply traditional stains and lacquers to achieve the period-appropriate appearance. For display models: apply a matte finish with period-authentic painted decorations. For functional models: apply durable exterior varnish with minimal decoration to facilitate maintenance.
For functional models: conduct a full load test to the rated capacity. Check wheel rotation under load. Verify braking systems if included. For museum pieces: apply protective wrapping and acid-free tissue. All models are packaged for safe international shipping.
