Hexagonal (六角亭): 6 sides, 6 columns, a lighter and more delicate appearance, traditionally for smaller garden settings. Octagonal (八角亭): 8 sides, 8 columns, more imposing and formal, traditionally used in larger gardens and imperial or temple settings. Both use the same traditional construction techniques and bracket systems.
Options include: Hip roof (硬山顶) — simple and elegant, suitable for most gardens;Raised hip roof (悬山顶) — more dramatic overhang; Pyramidal hip roof (攒尖顶) — conical top, classic for hexagonal/octagonal pavilions; Canopy (亭) — simplified flat-roof style for modern gardens. Roof covering: clay tile (traditional), slate, or synthetic tile.
Timber columns (木柱): most traditional, typically phoebe zhennan or pine with carved bases. Stone columns (石柱): marble or granite, can be plain or carved with dragon/phoenix patterns. Composite (钢筋混凝土核心+木外包): concrete core for structural strength with timber veneer for traditional appearance. Column height is typically 2.5-3.5m for garden pavilions.
Stone or concrete pad footings at each column position (400x400x500mm each) for standard garden pavilions. For soft ground or larger pavilions, a full perimeter foundation strip is recommended. We provide site-specific foundation drawings with every pavilion kit.
Mark the pavilion center point. For hexagonal: mark 6 positions at 60-degree intervals at the specified radius. For octagonal: mark 8 positions at 45-degree intervals. Verify all dimensions against the drawing. Confirm the site is level or plan for stepped foundations on slopes.
Excavate pad positions and pour concrete footings. For stone columns: cast steel anchor sleeves in the concrete. For timber columns: install anchor bolts or base plates. Allow concrete to cure for 7 days minimum before loading.
For stone columns: set columns on the anchor sleeves and verify vertical alignment. For timber columns: install the base plate and set the column, checking verticality with a spirit level in two perpendicular directions. Install temporary bracing to hold columns upright during the roof installation phase.
Install the main ring beam at the top of the columns. Then install the dougong (斗拱) bracket sets, working from the bottom tier upward. Each bracket set interlocks without nails — if properly made, the pieces should fall into place under their own weight.
Install the roof purlins (桷板) from the dougong outward to the eave. Apply waterproof membrane across the entire roof area. Install the eaves board and tile lath. Lay roof tiles in the traditional manner: eave tiles first, then body tiles working toward the ridge. Finish with ridge tiles at the top.
Verify all structural connections are secure. Check the roof is completely waterproof — test by hosing down the roof and checking interior for leaks. Remove all construction debris and temporary bracing. Landscape around the foundation to integrate the pavilion into the surrounding garden.
