Custom Product Lines
Zhongyu Woodcraft supports custom production of mortise-and-tenon joinery, ancient pavilions and corridors, gazebos and hexagonal pavilions, backed by 48 years of factory heritage with nationwide installation.
Historical Origins
The Chinese wooden pavilion traces back over 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty. What makes it unique is its complete reliance on wooden joinery—Dougong bracket sets distribute roof loads without a single nail, allowing structures to flex during earthquakes. Song Dynasty treatise Yingzao Fashi established proportions that guided pavilion building for centuries.
Craftsmanship and Joinery Techniques
Mortise and tenon joinery forms the foundation, where tenons fit precisely into corresponding holes and are secured with wooden pegs—joints actually tighten under load. Our craftsman notes mastering one joint type takes approximately two years. For outdoor pavilions, Meranti hardwood (density 0.8–0.9 g/cm³) offers natural rot resistance, while pressure-treated pine provides a cost-effective alternative with a 20–25 year service life. Components are manufactured to tolerances under 2mm, enabling prefabrication and quick on-site assembly.
Modern Applications as City Landmarks
Pavilions serve as cultural landmarks distinguishing cities from generic architecture. Hexagonal and octagonal designs suit garden settings, while multi-tier structures with sweeping roofs command attention as centerpieces. We supply installations from 3m to 12m diameter. From a sustainability standpoint, timber sequesters roughly 6–9 tons of carbon per medium pavilion, making wooden structures an eco-conscious choice alongside timeless aesthetics.
Project Case Study
A cultural heritage destination commissioned three interconnected structures: a central octagonal pavilion with double-eave hip roof (7.2m ridge height), flanked by two square pavilions connected by covered walkways, totaling 180sqm. Meranti hardwood was used throughout with hand-carved Song Dynasty–proportioned Dougong brackets. Prefabricated over 25 days as 347 numbered components, the framework installed in 12 working days, with carving and finishing adding 8 more days.
